Beautiful sentiment and a solid truth. I am also raising a child while educating other children and I reflect on the differences between my child and the other's frequently. I am a single mom and I have included my child in as many activities as possible throughout his life so that we could spend as much time together as possible. I have always been a hands on learner and I have passed that on to my son... love dinosaurs? let's go to a dig site, and hundreds of other real life experiences. It can be frustrating when in a classroom to see the experiences that a child hasn't been exposed to yet or the experiences I can't share with them because their parent's don't want them to get messy. It's a fine line to walk and negotiate daily.
That is awesome that you honor your son's interests. I, personally, find classrooms so limiting. So often children's interests and passions get put on the back burner, or placed in the hobby category, because school curricula fills up their plate. I love that you provide so many experiences based on his interests. It can lead to so many places. Dinosaurs- books, games, movies, toys, museums, pictures, sites, etc.- which fulfills all the subjects school created in a more connected way: history, math, science, art, literature, etc. And he is there and excited and learning and sharing with you. So much sweeter when the adults in your life take your passions seriously and take the time to fill your world with happiness and wonder. I imagine it's heartbreaking to see the kids in your class who have such limited exposure.
Alexandria, I would like to thank you for your informational blogs. They have been inspiring and helpful. I hope to hear from you in the next class. I strong feel that education can set a person free. Have a happy and safe holiday.
