EDUC 6766 Tools for Policy Makers and Advocates

Hello fellow Advocates!

After this class is the Capstone... I can't believe this journey is almost at a close. Well, not really, it's almost time for me to transition to the next phase! That's better said :) I am so elated to finally be into the specialty classes. Advocacy is a career for the heart, and I am so thrilled to be learning from everyone on board with me. Thank you ahead of time...

  1. Hi Alexandria,

Your expression of advocacy as a, "Career of the heart," is beautifully stated. When people ask me about my master's choice, I usually receive responses such as, "Oh." Can I blame them? When I think back to my initial interpretation of an advocate's role, I envisioned people wheedling signs and shouting in protest, political rhetoric designed to meet the needs of the white dominant cultural, sit ins, violence and more. In other words, I saw what the media intended me to see. Over the past 4 years, I have had the privilege to be seated at many tables with individuals whose main concern is the well-being of those whose voices either can't be heard or are not listened to; children and families. I quickly realized, I didn't just want to sit around the table, I wanted to have a voice at the table, a voice for equality, equity, and justice for the early childhood field. You are correct, it is career of the heart and if I might add, driven by passion.

    Thanks for being you,
    Lynnette
